Online Sales Tax Calculator

I got tired of guessing how much tax I'd pay every time I shopped online. Some sites show it at checkout, some don't. This online calculator solves that — pick a state, enter a price, and see exactly what you'll owe. Works in reverse too, for when you already know the total.

How I use this online sales tax calculator (and why you should too)

I used to guess how much I'd actually pay for something by rounding up 10% in my head. That works okay if the tax is exactly 10%, but in reality rates are all over the place — 6.25% in Texas, 7.25% in California, nothing in Oregon. This tool takes the guesswork out of it.

This online sales tax calculator gives you two ways to work. Normally you pick your state (or type in your local combined rate if you know it), enter the sticker price, and it shows the tax and total. But you can also flip it — enter the amount you already paid at the register, and it figures out the original price before tax and how much of your total was sales tax. I use that all the time when I'm splitting a group dinner that already has tax baked in.

All 50 states and DC are in the dropdown, with their base rates built in. A few states have no sales tax at all (hello, Delaware), and the tool reflects that. If your city or county adds extra, there's a custom rate box — just type in your total local rate and the free online sales tax calculator uses that number.

What this online sales tax tool actually does

🗺 All 50 States Loaded

I pulled the base state sales tax rates so you don't have to look them up. The sales tax calculator by state online updates instantly when you pick a different state.

🔢 Custom Rate Option

Live in a city with a combined rate of 9.125%? Just type it in. The online tax calculator overrides the state rate with whatever you enter, so you get an accurate local number.

↩ Works Both Ways

Need to know the original price before tax? Switch to the "total after tax" mode. This reverse sales tax calculator online strips out the tax so you can see what the item actually cost.

🔏 Zero Data Collection

Everything happens in your browser. The online sales tax calculator doesn't store, share, or even see your entries. It's as private as a calculator gets.

Questions people ask about online sales tax calculators

How do I calculate sales tax on an online purchase?

Take the price of the item and multiply it by the sales tax rate (as a decimal). For example, $75 × 0.0825 = $6.19 tax, so your total is $81.19. This online sales tax calculator does that instantly and also shows you the effective rate.

Are the state tax rates in this tool always accurate?

I built it using the state‑level base rates. Many places have additional local taxes that can bump the total rate up a few percent. If you know your local combined rate, override it in the custom field — that's the best way to get a precise number.

What if my state doesn't charge sales tax?

Five states — Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon — have no state sales tax. The dropdown will show 0% for those. Some cities in Alaska do charge local tax, so keep an eye on that.

Can I use this calculator on my phone?

Absolutely. The page resizes itself for smaller screens, and all the math runs right in your phone's browser. I've used it while standing in a store trying to figure out if I had enough cash.

Do I need to create an account or sign up?

No — this is a completely free online sales tax calculator. No registration, no email capture, no hidden fees. Just a tool that does one job and does it well.

Can I calculate tax for multiple items at once?

Right now it works best for a single purchase. If you have a cart with several items, add them up first and plug the total into the calculator. It'll give you the tax on the whole order.
